VDOT Says Roads Treacherous; Numerous Accidents Reported

Truck Accident

Police are receiving numerous accident reports as road conditions worsen.

Road conditions remain treacherous around the region this afternoon and there are multiple road closures throughout the county. Fairfax County 9-1-1 has received calls from drivers asking about abandoning their vehicles. These vehicles will be towed at the owner’s expense. If you can safely move your vehicle out of travel lanes you can call a tow truck to get the vehicle home; any vehicle left for more than 12 hours or deemed a road hazard by the police will be towed.

Abandoned vehicles may also contribute to accidents and the owner will be ticketed in this event. Exiting your vehicle puts you and other drivers in danger. If your vehicle is stuck and you are in danger, call 9-1-1, but otherwise you should have it towed.

Please remain off the roads if possible. Visibility is limited, temperatures are dropping and conditions are further deteriorating.

More than 3,800 trucks continue to plow roads in Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Arlington counties according to VDOT. Staying off the roads allows crews to work safely. Crews are spreading salt and abrasives, as appropriate, concentrating their response efforts on the most heavily traveled routes. VDOT’s goal is to have all state-maintained roads passable within 48 hours after a storm ends. This storm; however, may deliver a second punch as temperatures drop to record levels and icy conditions remain likely into Friday.

Our roads are not unploughed. we cannot take our car out to drive our children to FCPS schools. All schools have been declared closed except FCPS. What is happening with decision makers? They want our children to suffer during winter storm. Declare schools close March 6, 2015.

Oh my gosh!!!!! Calm down! They are going to call it! You know that! They just haven’t done it yet.I swear people here are so whiney! Yes! Let’s let the children suffer??!!! Give me a break!

Just saw on NBC news, FCPS closed. Enjoy the snow day!

    • Alison says :

FCPS schools will be closed tomorrow.

As expected, they just called schools closed tomorrow. When you say ‘they want our children to suffer during winter storm’ I assume you won’t let your kids play outside in the snow right? . FYI- People like you ARE problem for our decision makers

Guarantee it’ll be unscheduled leave, too. We can’t afford to risk paying those limited-term employees in a county where, according to one member of our (part-time) Board of Supervisors, $75k isn’t enough to “be able to live here and raise his family.” Making us wait until 5 AM is just Ed and Dave’s way of making us squirm.

      • Publius says :

Of course, even a preliminary announcement of that would be nice, or a “undecided at this time ” status update. I understand the “no news is normal operating procedures” idea almost every day of the year…but when there’s a significant chance, and (I assume) they’re monitoring the situation, it couldn’t hurt.

I understand it is a difficult process to make the call for the county/courts/etc. But it would be very helpful if the website would be updated that a decision hasn’t been made yet so we’re not left wondering what is going on. Even something as simple as weather conditions are being monitored but a decision regarding closures has not been made at this time.

      I agree.

I agree, a simple update would be really nice. i see the same comment every time. Once the schools close the county should update there page to say they are monitoring the situation and a decision hasn’t been made yet. It is really frustrating to see the page hasn’t been updated for almost 18 hours.

Question: In this age, when models are used to predict practically everything, does the County consult with VDOT about their snow clearing/road condition model to determine whether or not to open or close County offices? If so, can’t the decision be made before 5 am?

    • Ffx bites says :

Exactly. I always say that if vdot is telling people to get to stay off the road, why is the county saying “alright workers ,common in”. It’s the dumbest thing I have ever seen. As a county employee I’m disgusted . Morale is already in the toilet and to have to come in to the office in “treacherous driving conditions” is crazy.

Jesus Christ….You guys are starting to look like the school teachers screaming for a day off with pay..Yes I am essential personal for 20 years…this has been the most generous county executive I have seen…STOP YOUR WHINING …Goto work or take leave…We are the County Government …NOT FCPS!!!

I am an not a FFX county employee. However, my employer is one of the many in this area following your lead in operating status decisions. We have to be in the office by 6 am. I assume that is sooner than most of your employees. I will have to go out soon to be at work on time…. unless you will post a decision soon. I am sure, I speak for others as well, when I say that, I know, that it probably is always difficult to make a decision, because you will have people complaining no matter what, but what I’d like to see, is that you post whatever decision it is earlier. There are lots of people besides FFX county employees waiting for it…And some of them, just like me, are up right now, dreading to arrive at work after a treacherous ride, just to be told “site closed, you can go home”. Please post soon.

I find it interesting that the “essential personal [sic]” above seems disgusted with everyone for wanting a decision about Fairfax County’s operating status, yet, he obviously went to this Website for the very same reason

From the suspicious wording, I’d wager that the particular anonymous in question was actually Ed Long (or possibly his boy Rohrer).
