Police Accident Policy Now in Effect

Posted 6:25 p.m.

Though it’s best to stay home tonight if you can, our Police Department will only be responding to accident reports that meet the following criteria:

  • Injuries.
  • Hit and run.
  • One or more vehicles are not drivable.
  • Active argument or conflict between the drivers.

If you call in a routine accident (703-691-3121, TTY 711) that does not meet the above criteria, you will be directed to exchange information with the other driver and to notify your insurance company.

If you need to drive, have emergency supplies in your vehicle: water, food, blankets, flashlight, charged smartphone and extra batteries at a minimum.

Why do some of the alerts (phone and email) ask me to respond to confirm receipt? Some end up in spam I’m very reluctant to do so. Are they spam – or something worse?

    • Joan says :

they ask you to reply so they can stop contacting you in the next method for the weather event.

    • Fairfax County Emergency Information says :

All of the weather alerts have the “confirm receipt” question… recipients don’t have to confirm receipt; but if they do, it lets the system know that the message was received so it doesn’t send the message to the other devices/numbers that person has registered. Also, all of the messages should be coming from the same address so the recipient could “white list” that address; also, text messages should be coming from the same phone number as well.

Thanks. It helps to know the purpose. Not all the alerts ask for the confirmation; the ones that do go to my spam folder automatically
. It was the ones that are on my phone that I was reluctant to confirm.
