While I agree that you shouldn’t leave your pets in a car when it’s very cold out, the statement “The inside of a car can act as a refrigerator…” makes no sense. Heat transfer always goes from a higher temperature source to a lower temperature source unless there is energy added to the process (such as in refrigeration). That explains why, via radiation from the sun (the energy source), a car gets hotter than its surroundings in summer. There is no mechanism by which heat will be pumped out of a car in the winter as your statement asserts. The temperature may equalize with the outside temperature via conduction, but it will not get colder than the outside temperature unless there is some energy source pulling heat out of the car (like a refrigerator or air conditioner). Just stating the known facts should be enough for most readers to follow your advice – no need to jazz it up with urban legends or hearsay.

MONDAY 1-12-15 FREEZING RAIN BEFORE 10 AM, THEN RAIN FREEZING RAIN BETWEEN 10AM and 1PM, DECLARE SCHOOL CLOSING EARLY RATHER THAN ALERTING US AT THE LAST MOMENT. WE CAN PLAN OUR CHILDREN SCHEDULES. IT IS HIGH TIME FCPS AND OTHER COUNTY SCHOOLS SHOULD NOT TAKE THINGS FOR GRANTED. YOU MENTION AND BRAG ABOUT SAFETY OF CHILDREN BEING IN THE SCHOOL. THE FCPS SCHOOLS DID NOT CLEAN THE SIDE WALKS, FEW SCHOOLS ARE LOCATED INTERNALLY WHEREIN THE ROADS ARE STILL UNPLOUGHED AS OF LAST EVENING. AS FAIRFAX COUNTY CITIZEN WE PARENTS SUFFER SO MUCH MENTALLY TO BRING IN CHILDREN TO BUS STOPS, ALL INTERNAL ROADS ARE SO MESSY AND UNPLOUGHED. POSSIBILITY OF RISK OF HYPOTHERMIA FOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS AS THEY ARE BEING EXPOSED TO/FRO AT BUS STOP DURING THIS FREEZING / SLEET RAIN. THERE ARE SEVERAL UNDERPRIVILEGED STUDENTS IN FCPS WHO ARE UNABLE TO AFFORD INSURANCES. DECLARE SCHOOL CLOSING ON MONDAY 1-12-15.

I don’t agree. I want school to be there. At the most there should be a delay or early closing. But no school off. Kids are missing a lot in school, especially if they are in middle and hig school.

On a second thought I do agree with you. Kids have blackboard. Why should FCPS risk our kids. I demand school to be closed on Monday the 12th of January. I am angry with FCPS decisions already.

The National Weather Service has issued a Freezing Rain Advisory for Northern Virginia that begins Sunday at 10 p.m. and continues until Monday at 9 a.m. The weather service predicts the region will see less than a tenth of an inch of ice. Precipitation will begin from the southwest and head northeast turning to rain by mid-morning Monday.

The Capital Weather Gang narrows it down, forecasting ”possible freezing rain” from 6-8 a.m. in Northern Virginia.

The Virginia Department of Transportation urges drivers to delay trips Monday to allow trucks to treat roads, as freezing rain is expected to begin overnight and last well through the morning rush hour.

Can you guys above message of weather of freezing. the school kids /parents can’t even walk on sidewalks nor parents can drive them to bus stops. All FCPS parents are already upset by keeping schools open on snow day. Declare school closing on Monday 1/12/15.

The ice rain will start on Sunday at 10 PM, and continue on to Monday at 9 AM. School should be closed because the roads will be slippery and the buses can’t go. Last but not least FCPS answer my question. How can the kids walk to school, when there is ice rain?

You got it right, but I want to add something. Accuweather said it is likely for a snow day tomorrow, which means that school should be cold due to the terrible icy conditions, Also in Accuweather it says that the bus stop is poor. Well I have a question for you FCPS. How can you say there is school, even if the bus stop is full of ice? Do you want my children to end up in the hospital or get sick? If I made the decision, I would close the school for the day, And we can start off safe on Tuesday with no hassle. FCPS has gotten on my nerves now these days. This is Ridiculous.
