Winter Storm Warning Until 1 p.m.

Posted 9:36 a.m.

The National Weather Service has now issued a winter storm warning for the county and some surrounding areas until 1 p.m. 3-6 inches of snow are now expected in some locations.

Roads are difficult to navigate in many areas of the county this morning. Please drive with caution and watch for pedestrians. Pedestrians and transit riders, please be careful outside.

The Police Department’s accident policy is now in effect, meaning that if you are involved in a minor fender-bender, with NO injuries and NOT blocking the roadway, please move off of the roadway, exchange relevant information regarding driver’s license, vehicle registration information and automobile insurance coverage.

Two other reminders because we have received many questions on this blog and social media platforms:

  • Fairfax County Public Schools makes its own status decisions, not the county government. Visit for any changes.
  • The Virginia Department of Transportation plows our county roads, not the county government. Check snow plow status.

What You Can Do

When the snow stops later today, please take time to remove the snow from your sidewalks. Visit our new webpage at

Cannot get out of my driveway! My husband left at 6:30 am and he is still not at work – stuck in traffic. Over 4 hours so far for a 25 minute commute. Should have delayed school then cancelled.

  2. Shree says :

Do not risk school children, Fairfax county staff and put them in danger, release early today and declare school close tommorow 6/7/15.

I totally agree with you. First of all today, January 7th, the roads were still terrible in homes if the people neighborhoods. The kids can’t even get out of their own street because of the snow and ice. The weather was cold, but the snow turned to ice. Kids can break their bones. They can’t even get out. I demand a 2hr delay tomorrow, the 8 of January. This is ridiculous. I pretty sure FCPS can make a better decision than a 2hr delay. I won’t even send my son to school. The school said it is okay, we give you an excused absence. This inadequate.

I see that FCPS has set school to open 2 hours late tomorrow, but where do we find out about Fairfax County Courts? Do they post inclement weather closings/delays somewhere? I’ve got court tomorrow and would like to not risk travel to court if it’s not safe to do so. Thanks.

Why doesn’t the county post liberal leave info, court info the same time the school systems post their weather schedule? Makes it difficult for families with kids to plan/react.
