Six Morning Commute Tips

Posted 5:05 a.m.

If you plan to drive or take transit this morning, please use your best judgment and keep in mind these quick tips so you arrive safely and keep others safe, too. These will also be important as the day progresses and the storm gets worse.

1.) Some snow has already fallen. Clean your car off completely. Use headlights, too!

2.) Slow down and allow for extra time to reach your destination. Slowing down is also a good idea since slippery roads mean less stopping time.

3.) Be aware of potentially icy areas such as shady spots and bridges.

4.) Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind other vehicles.

5.) Stay in the car if visibility becomes poor later today. You may become disoriented and lost while wandering in a snowstorm. If you have a cellphone, call for help. Have a few supplies in your car such as a blanket and some food.

6.) Drivers, watch out for pedestrians and pedestrians watch out for drivers. Let’s all get to our destinations safely and take our time.

Open on time. Whoa, what is the county trying to archive on a snow day!. Why not just close for the day, Risk thelives of people that will make their decision based on the whip of a ego inflated politician

On a more legibal note, Fairfax should not be open today, and it is almost 5:24 in the morning, and I have no way of knowing if the courts or the probation offices are open, I mean it is not hard to just come right out and announce being close, you are risking people lives by putting them on the roads in this kind of weather. Get your shit together Fairfaux, and get the ball rolling.

I saw the Gentleman that makes the school decision saying ” I have a car that is not road worth, i drive it around before I make the decision to close. When will this no good Managers/ politicians know that public service is not about them,

Agreed! Can’t believe the federal government is closed and all transit and Fairfax County is saying they are open but it’s going to get worse and you have to use leave. They’ve reached a new low!

Lame–the news is covering a massive storm, warning people to stay off the roads and Fairfax county is posting safe commuting tips???

  6. Anonymous says :

Well if the roads are that bad maybe you should have closed for the day!

Wow….the news is covering a massive storm, the federal government is closed, all public transit systems are closed and Fairfax County doesn’t want to have to pay everyone out for closing today and instead is forcing people to take vacation or risk their lives. Way to stay classy!

Wow…again another way of the County showing that they care about their employees! This is unbelievable when clearly this storm is supposed to get worst. Loudoun County maybe the place to work and live….

I am shocked the county is open today as well. This seems like a decision that risks lives and that contradicts the advice posted on the website to stay off the roads.

The county could at least be give the employees a two hour delay. It is still snowing and the conditions are going to deteriorate.

I have seen NOTHING about trash pick-up on the website for today, Wednesday March 6th. It would make sense to postpone it till tomorrow or whenever is appropriate, but the public needs to know. There are trash cans lininig all the roads in my neighborhood that will likely need to be plowed. WHY ISNT:TRASH REMOVAL INFORMATION PROMINENT ON YOUR WEBSITE?

    • Fairfax County Emergency Information says :

The trash decision was just made. Trash and Recycling collection service in sanitary districts has been canceled for Wednesday. The current plan is to collect trash and recycling from Wednesday and Thursday customers on Thursday, March 7, as conditions permit.

Thank you. Please note this prominently on your home page and on the feeds on running on local television channels. There are a lot of trash cans that will block snow plows. This could be a real mess.

Really?! They always want to preach about how they value their employees but this just shows they don’t. This is ridiculous! The courts are closed, the federal government is closed and they want us to come in or use our leave. Sad day.

The best safe driving tip you could give would be to advise the “Decision Makers” in the County to allow people to stay home by closing for the day. The “unscheduled leave” option just doesn’t work for people who can’t afford it, and many county employees don’t have the luxury of working from home.

You guys close for rain but NOT a snow storm that is calling for heavy wind and power outages?! What a joke. Haha!
