Hurricane Irene Update (2:30 a.m.)

Hurricane Irene is beginning to diminish in Fairfax County. The National Weather Service predicts another 0.5 to 1 inch of rain until daybreak. Sustained winds will be 25-30 mph with 30-40 mph gusts, slowly diminishing Sunday afternoon.

The National Weather Service predicts no further flood threat in the Huntington, Belle View and New Alexandria sections of Fairfax County.

Thousands of homes are without power in the county and more homes may still lose electricity. View important utility phone numbers and links to outage maps. Be prepared to report a loss of utilities. Please do not use candles – they may cause a fire. Make sure you have your account number available so you can use automated systems due to high call volumes. In the case of an electrical outage, it is important to take careful precautions to ensure food safety.

Thank you for posting this. When our power went out I discovered the Dominion Electric number I’ve been calling for years “is no longer in service.” Luckily I had printed off your page of emergency contacts.
