This page is updated throughout Hurricane Sandy, listing known and verified closed roads in Fairfax County.
If you must be out, “turn around, don’t drown” if you encounter flooded roads. As roads are re-opened they will be moved to a separate list of re-opened roads at the bottom of this page.

Would folks prefer an overview map with plotted locations to individual links pointing directly to an individual location?
Yes, that would be very helpful. Should be very easy to do with Google maps or a similar service.

511Virginia.org is reporting Lawyers Road closed due to flooding, but it doesn’t say what part of Lawyers (near what intersection). Do you know?

Schools open tomorrow?
Don’t trust the list of re-opened streets! Just talked to my brother who is standing at Woodburn Rd. & Robey speaking with a police officer as a road crew erects a jersey wall . . .

Georgetown Pike @ Swinks Mill is closed according to the list above, but your GIS map does not reflect this? Which is it open or closed?

School tomorrow for FCPS?
i dont know how we would be able to have school. 90 roads are still closed. and over 54000 people are without power. for safety purposes it would be best to close school. driving on alot of these roads could be very dangerous espcially with all the young drivers
How about selectively closing schools. Our community is fine. Way too early in the year to be missing so many days when it isn’t absolutely necessary…young drivers can catch the bus or parents can drive too school. Those of us who have to work have to get back to work.
True, although selective closing gets a bit confusing for some people.
With so many trees down, and so many roads close I don’t see how it is safe for children to go to school. Old Dominon and Georgetown Pike are closed in certain areas and I am extremely worried about students driving from Great Falls to school. Additionally there is a tree down in my neighborhood, a bus will not be able to get through.

The County did a poor job this morning by failing to alert the local TV traffic reporters about the fact that Old Dominion Drive was still closed at the Beltway in combination with the closing of Georgetown Pike at Old Dominion Drive. It resulted in a morning rush hour nightmare. Be sure and get the word out about the status of both those routes before this evenings rush hour!
Lewinsville Road (7700 block) is still closed…. it certainly DID NOT reopen yesterday.

A very good job keeping the public informed, much appreciated the road closures and updates.
A great start, but this map didn’t include alot of the closures on Tuesday afternoon when I tried to get to my elderly father. You need to do a better job of updating the map in real time for it to be useful. Not sure where the communications link is broken, but the map is of limited use unless it’s up to date. Thanks in advance!
