The heaviest snow is suppose to start in the afternoon, what if people go into work and get stuck. The government opening is a bad decision all that is cared for is the money not safety.

    • Anonymous says :

My thoughts exactly. If the federal government closed, why wouldn’t Fairfax. I have horrible memories of going into work only to be stuck for hours and hours trying to get back home.

  2. Anonymous says :

FFX county Gov not closing? What bunch o A holes. Don’t care about employee safety one bit.

  3. Anonymous says :

    A holes

  4. anonymous. says :

So its dangerous for our children to be outside and taken to school but we have enough grown ups to warrant opening the govmnt that we can spare a few that might get in snow related accidents or such? Nice work Fairfax….I am sure you have more important things to do than the federal government. which closed.

  5. Scrooge says :

FFX gov doesn’t care about employees …A holes!

The federal government is closed, why not fairfax? How can schools and the courts close but not the main? This is ridiculous, no safety concerns at all.

    • Joann says :

They don’t care and won’t be elected again hat’s for sure. Not everyone has a four wheel drive luxe vehicle you bozos!!

For those asking about operating status decisions, here’s more information from the county executive: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/emergency/hazards/snow-ice-decisions-county-executive.htm

  8. Scrooge says :

We’re not asking about the process. It’s plain wrong to use personal time to keep from getting killed on the roads. Again… why does FFX county think it’s more important than the Fed?

  9. Anonymous says :

That decision making thing is fake because if the federal govt closes fairfax govt should be to

  10. Anonymous says :

Here’s a lovely scenario: Kids stuck at home, and parents stuck at work. Is it really worth it?

  11. Anonymous says :

If the storm hits as bad as they are predicting, we better not have to wake up early to come in tomorrow because the snow is suppose to last until 11pm and by the time morning comes that will just be so annoying. Peoples safety are more important than money!!

  12. Anonymous says :

fairfax county does not care about our safety. why else are we not closed?

  13. Anonymous says :

i’m super excited to be stuck in traffic in the snow on my way home tonight. *sarcasm* close the govt before it gets worse!

Excellent statement about how/why decisions are made for closing Fairfax County Government.

Interesting to see the comments about the government closing. As the article says, employees can you leave to stay home. The Federal government may be closed but those who can telework must either work or take leave. As a resident and tax payer, my employer gave me the option of either coming into the office, teleworking, or taking leave. I made the choice of teleworking

The person above is not 100% accurate. OPM states the following:

Non-emergency employees (including employees on pre-approved paid leave) will be granted excused absence (administrative leave) for the number of hours they were scheduled to work unless they are:
      •required to telework,
•on official travel outside of the Washington, DC, area,
      •on leave without pay, or
•on an alternative work schedule (AWS) day off.

Telework-Ready Employees who are scheduled to perform telework on the effective day of the announcement or who are required to perform telework on a day when Federal offices are closed must telework the entire workday or request leave, or a combination of both, in accordance with their agency’s policies and procedures, subject to any applicable collective bargaining requirements.

the person wrote “CAN” as you can see from my above text which is taken directly from OPM it only applies to those who are required telework and those who are scheduled. So, you my friend are wrong!
